Just a friend singer, Mario took to Instagram this past Friday, June 2nd to announce that his mom passed away. The R&B crooner had a checkered relationship with his mother, as documented in his MTV documentary I Won’t Love You to Death: The Story of Mario and His Mom.

Mario’s mother, Shawntia Hardaway had an ongoing addiction with herion, which put a notable strain on the relationship that she had with her son. In 2010, Mario was arrested in Baltimore for allegedly pushing his mother. He was charged with second degree assault as a result, however charges were eventually dropped about a month later.

“Your soul lives forever beside mine,” Mario captioned. “We love you Shawntia Hardaway. I love you eternally.”

Prayers up for Mario and his family, as they experience this difficult time of grief.

We’re sending our deepest condolences out to singer #Mario and his family after the passing of his mother ??????
